The Blackberry 9100 3G Pearl is a functional new handset from the manufacturer. Recently announced, and due for release in the third quarter of 2010, the 9100 3G Pearl is equipped with many functions which you may expect from a Blackberry.
The handset is equipped with an internal phonebook which can store a practically unlimited number of entries and fields and comes with the Photocall facility. This is whereby a photo is assigned to each contact, which is then displayed on the screen any time that person calls. 256 MB of internal memory is provided for storage of data such as media files, although the included micro SD slot has a pre-installed 2 GB memory card for the same purpose. Memory can be expanded further by installing a card of up to 32 GB in this slot.
The TFT screen can display up to 256K colours within the pixel layout of 360x400, providing vibrant, clear display of on screen imagery. A half quality keyboard is provided for efficient text entry along with a touch –sensitive optical trackpad for navigating the Blackberry operating system.
As with many Blackberry handsets, functionality is the order of the day and the 9100 Pearl 3G is certainly no exception. Blackberry maps is made available courtesy of GPS with A-GPS support. A document editor, which is compatible with the Office documents and an organiser provide handy productivity tools for business users whilst out of the office. MP3 and MP4 files along with other formats of video and music files are supported by the versatile internal media player.
The 9100 Pearl 3G is equipped with a digital camera providing 3.15 mega pixels which operates at a pixel resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. This allows still images of high quality to be taken and the task is simplified somewhat thanks to the inclusion of features such as Autofocus and an LED flash. The camera can also shoot video as an alternative method of image capture.
The dimensions of the handset are certainly pocket friendly at 108x50x 13.3 mm and weighing in at just 93.6 g. This makes it a comfortable phone to hold and use on the move.
Vibration and ringing alert users to incoming calls and messages, along with the option to utilise MP3 files as ringtones. This gives users the chance to customise their phone so they can hear the song of their choice any time the phone rings. Handsfree communication is made possible thanks to a speakerphone and a 3.5 mm audio jack.
As many would expect from a Blackberry, a number of connectivity features is utilised. GPRS and EDGE, both class 10 versions, provide the initial means of connecting to cellular networks in areas with little or no 3G coverage. In areas covered by 3G, HSDPA provides Internet access at speeds of up to 3.6 mega bytes per second (alongside HSUPA). Wi-Fi Technology provides a faster Internet connection in areas where a wireless Internet router is located.
Whilst the Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G may not offer the most advanced technology, simply provides efficient functionality in order to get the job done with the minimum of fuss. This is sure to appeal to users who seek an effective functionality tool rather than a fashion statement.
