How We Can Save Money at The Grocery Store Today
Discusses ways we can save more money at the grocery store. Use these simple techniques to trim your costs.
Today everything has increased in price including clothing,
food, utilities, and recently gas. There are many places we can save money and one of the easiest places to save a few dollars here and there is the super market. In addition, it is very easy to spend more money on items in the grocery store if you don’t know how to compare prices of goods.
Do Math on Your Cell Phone:
Take advantage of your cell phone and let it do all the hard calculations for you while you are in the grocery store isle. For example, lets say that you are shopping for oranges. You require 5 oranges for a certain recipe you are making for a party. Oranges are sold at 3 or $2 dollars and they are also sold in 2 pound bags for $4 dollars. With these different numbers it can be confusing. Luckily you have your hand cell phone calculator.
For starters, count the number of oranges in the 2 pound bag. You see there are 7 oranges in the bag. Next lets determine the price per orange in each scenario. Divide the price by the number of oranges. If 3 oranges are $2 dollars we can see that $2 divided by 3 equals .666. So each orange costs 66 cents. Next we take the bag of 7 oranges that cost $4. We divide $4 by 7 oranges and we see that the cost per orange is 57 cents. The oranges in the bag are actually cheaper.
Remember you can apply this general principle in the supermarket or wherever you purchase items in bulk from wholesale stores. Just take the total amount in dollars and divide by the number of items. Many supermarkets and other stores actually have done many of the conversions for you. If you look at the lables many of the items will be broken down in cost per ounce.
How about the Price Per Unit
This is usually referred to as the cost per gallon, quart, etc. If there is no sticker breaking down the cost simply divide the price into the total number of ounces. This will give you the cost per ounce. However, many items are perishable and sometimes paying more per ounce can actually save you money if you do not consume the goods before they expire.
Get in the habit of bringing your cell phone and soon enough you may be able to do the calculations in your head.
