It's spring break and you probably want to have some fun at some parties or bars, so you've done the responsible thing and are taking turns being the designated driver.

But,Designated Drivers - A Great Thing, But Are You Covered? Articles will the insurance policy of the automobile owner cover the designated driver? Or, if you’re from out of town, does the policy of the person renting the care cover another driver?

These are both good questions and ones you should know the answers to before you let someone drive your car as it can become confusing as to whose insurance company is responsible for covering any damages should an incident occur. And, the answers are different for privately owned versus rented cars.

If you own the automobile, generally the insurance travels with the vehicle regardless of the driver. You can safely plan to have a designated driver. But, if an accident does occur and the owner’s policy limits do not cover the incident, the designated driver’s policy will most likely kick in to cover the difference.

Since designated drivers have your permission to drive your vehicle and unless the police officer tickets them for the accident, they are relieved of any liability. However, if they are cited as the blame for the accident, they may or may not be liable – it depends on the individual situation.

If you have rented a car and you are the only one listed as the driver, then you do not have permission to let someone else drive the car even in the instance of needing a designated driver. If you let someone else drive the car and they have an accident you will be responsible. Even if you purchased a Loss Damage Waiver, it will become void if another person is behind the wheel. But, on the other hand, it is much safer to leave the driving to a designated driver, even though you may be at risk.

Long story short, if you are on vacation or spring break with your friends, always define who is the designated driver. And, if you are using a rental car, why not plan on having your designated driver call a Taxi if the person whose name is on the car rental form is not in a position to drive. It’s far better to leave the rental car for the evening and spend a few dollars on a Taxi, than to risk the repercussions!

Enjoy the break and leave the driving to a designated driver or to a Taxi!
