Let me quote a famous quote over here by Author C. Clarke “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. Well taking that quote in perspective of GINA (Geometry and Functions in ‘N’ Adaptations) a concept car by BMW yes it is magic. I never thought someday I would see a car shape shifting to my mind it was impossibility in my life time. But here we go BMW did it and it is something that boggles my mind. I was in sort of disbelief about the idea let alone a shape shifting automobile being a reality but as the saying goes “seeing is believing” well now after that I do believe in,GINA a drive into future Nanotechnology Articles rather now I believe in lots of other things.  Now obviously I should keep it to the GINA as discussing other things that I now believe in are irrelevant to the scope of this article. So what I did I dig out about this whole GINA thing and here what I found. Features and specifications of this far cry
  • Fabric cantors before the dugout I was wondering how can a metal body shape shift but then I realized it has some special fabric wrapped around its body that give a look of real metal and is quite sturdy not like some cloth that you can pinch or tweak with hands. It is stretchable water resistant transparent made of polyurethane-coated Spandex. The fabric that is over the contours moves by motors and hydraulics beneath it.
  • No door hinges, the car doors bend with loads of curves giving a feel of skin. Overall the skin is smooth and without any joins.
  • Carbon frame body.
  • The front head lights come out as if the car is some metal living thing it kind of blinks, the mechanism under the fabric at that spot is controlled by motors.
  • After gaining a certain speed the spoiler comes up at rear giving it the much needed stability to keep it stable on the road yet the car remain in one piece no changes in body.
  • Temperature and water resistant fabric body. That’s why I suppose it is different from the rest.
  • Changes its outer contours in certain situations to balance airflow.
  • Entering and getting out of GINA is way too comfortable, the car’s steering wheel and other components stays idle when the car is parked thus making an easy way in for the driver. While once the driver sits in, the steering wheel and other components jack out to their preset positions.
  • And the hood opening is like incision, the insides shows up and you can peek in like some auto physician.

Some negatives

  • Now as we know the car is still just  a concept developed by BMW and it didn’t make up to roads, but still am a bit skeptical about its fabric body like would it be hard enough to take any kind of abuse. Like what if somebody from your neighborhood or anyone around makes a gash in it. How much would it cost to repair. I wonder if it would be repairable at all.
  • The other thing that concerns me a lot is the saying “accidents will happen” so in such case how would GINA perform is something we can’t wholly fathom yet but imagine you are vrooming in with speed just in a fabric on your bad day. How would that turn out the result kind scares me out. Though metal cars don’t do any good at this point either but I wonder would one even come out of GINA in one piece.
Review (short and sweet)

No wonder the whole idea is out of the box I will give them 10 out 10 for that and the concept with its negatives is just because it’s still a baby step into future with time hopefully things will add up to make it more safe and secure. And will hopefully help us in a lot more ways to live our lives with comfort with a touch of luxury. This reminds me of another quote by Freeman Dayson “Technology is a gift of God. After the gift of life it is perhaps the greatest of God's gifts. It is the mother of civilizations, of arts and of sciences”.
