The highly anticipated Subaru Impreza WRX has officially hit the Japanese market this week as a late 2007 model. This launch precedes the unveiling of the high-performance STI version, which is set to be revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in October. The new WRX promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience, drawing on Subaru's rich motorsport heritage.
The new Subaru Impreza WRX, known as the Impreza S-GT in Japan, features a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-4 engine that produces 248 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. When this model arrives in the U.S. as a 2008 model, it will be equipped with a 2.5-liter version of the engine, delivering 225 horsepower and 226 pound-feet of torque. Unfortunately, due to stringent European emissions regulations, the WRX model will not be available in the UK when the hatchback arrives later this year.
The "wildest" high-performance 2008 Subaru WRX STI remains under wraps until the Tokyo Motor Show, but some key details have already been leaked. The WRX STI will feature an enhanced 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine, producing over 300 horsepower and approximately 400 pound-feet of torque. This powerhouse will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, with an automated manual option from Aisin expected to join the lineup in 2009.
Subaru is positioning the new Impreza to compete directly with the 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X, which will offer a sequential manual gearbox with an optional dual-clutch paddle-shift steering wheel. The top-tier Impreza will boast unique features such as a specially designed hood, grille, and a large front bumper with substantial air intakes. Flared wheel arches will house 18-inch alloy wheels, concealing the existing Brembo brake system. Engineers have also refined the handling with a more compact double-wishbone rear suspension.
Inside, the new Impreza range features higher quality materials, with the STI variant receiving supportive bucket seats to enhance its sporty appeal. Subaru is also working on a turbo diesel boxer-4 engine for the WRX, expected to be available by early 2009. This move aligns with Subaru's plans to introduce high-mpg diesel versions of the Forester and Impreza shortly after the first diesel Legacy model debuts next summer.
Subaru is also developing a five-speed automatic and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), both of which may be available by mid-2009. These advancements reflect Subaru's commitment to providing a comfortable, reliable, and enjoyable driving experience.
Subaru, the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., is currently an affiliate of Toyota Motor Corporation, which owns 8.7% of the company. This partnership began when General Motors sold its 20% stake in Subaru to Toyota in 1999. Subaru's new theme emphasizes the company's goal of offering a comfortable, enjoyable drive for both the driver and passengers, while ensuring peace of mind, reliability, and enhanced functionality.
The new Subaru Impreza WRX and its high-performance STI variant are set to make a significant impact in the automotive world. With advanced engineering, competitive features, and a commitment to quality, Subaru continues to solidify its reputation as a leader in the industry. As the company looks to the future, it remains dedicated to providing innovative and reliable vehicles that meet the needs of driving enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.
