Binding Machines

Binding is a process by which the pages and cover of a book are bound together through a strip sewn over or along an edge of the book for reinforcement or decoration. Hardcover bindings are generally made of thick cardboard covered with cloth or paper. In the old days hardcover was made out of leather or some other expensive material, and the binding process was done manually. Nowadays, this process is done with machines known as binding machines.

There are two ways the binding knots function: friction type and knotted ends type. In friction type, the binding knots pass at least once around a load of papers and are held in place by the friction caused between the windings of the line that pass over top of other winding. In knotted ends type, the binding knots pass at least once around a load and are held in place by the two ends of the line being knotted together.

Other popular binding methods include perfect binding, saddle-stitching and collate and cut. There are certain kinds of binding and finishing processes which require just one step. For example, leaflets or newspaper inserts only need to be folded. Other processes, such as binding books or magazines, must be done in progressive steps.

The different kinds of binding machines used in this process are: comb binding machines, double-loop wire-binding machines, spiral/coil wire binding machines, combination (coil/wire) book-binding machines, and thermal binding.
