Apple's new iPad has been having multiple problems since launch. The latest to surface is problems with battery overcharging which can cause some serious problems if not addressed soon. There seems to be a bug in the new iPad software, which is why it is not alerting the user when the battery is fully charged. It means even after the battery charge indicator shows 100% charged, the battery keeps on charging. The repercussions for users could be dire as a battery could explode, and we're sure Apple doesn't want that on its hands.

Apple made a statement after the overcharging problem was brought to light by Dr. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate  on a CNBC segment recently. The company claims that when the iPad shows the full battery icon, it doesn't mean it is fully charged, but full enough to give users the promised 10 hours of battery life. If you ask us, that explanation makes no sense whatsoever - why would Apple design the new iPad to show the battery 100% full, and yet it isn't, despite the obvious? Apple needs to buckle down and release a fix before things get out of hand.

Another thing Apple and users should take into consideration, is that overcharging can damage the battery, and a damaged battery would leave the new iPad with less than stellar battery performance, or it could just explode. How many times we are going to say that?

According to Soneira, "Damaging the longevity of the battery is then exactly what the new iPad's internal battery charging hardware and software are doing since it is (Apple's) responsibility to properly control and manage the battery recharging process."

Soneira also went on the state that: "It's pretty obvious that if the new iPad knows that it is fully charged then it should automatically stop the charging."

Processor

Yes, it is one of areas Apple has introduced some modification on its new iPad. The third-gen iPad is equipped with a high performance, power-efficient dual core Apple A5X processor. The A5X, a slight upgrade to the company’s famous A5 chip, is touted to perform several times better than Nvidia’s rocking Tegra 3 quad core CPU. On the other hand, the Prime tablet is mainly recognized for its 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core Cortex-A9 CPU. It is supplemented by a 1GB of RAM.

Storage

Cupertino based tech giant Apple’s iPad 3 features three variants depending on its onboard storage capacities; 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. The Prime also shows off 32GB and 64GB memory variants, which also have microSD slots for memory sticks up to 32GB. Remember, Apple hasn’t yet started to offer microSD slots on its products.

Operating System

The iPad runs on iOS 5.1, the first biggest upgrade to the company’s celebrated iOS 5. The Transformer Prime, which was initially released on Android 3.2 Honeycomb in December 2011, now has the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The latest Android 4 makes Android tablet very efficient.

Camera

The iPad 3 sports a sophisticated 5-megapixel iSight camera plus advanced capabilities like autofocus and tap-to-focus. You can shoot 1080p HD video on the tablet, which has a front VGA camera for FaceTime chatting. The Prime supersedes the iPad 3 with an 8-megapixel rear camera with 3264 x 2448 pixels, autofocus and LED flash. The device can also capture video at 1080p quality. For video chatting, the Prime mounts a 2-megapixel front camera as well.

Battery

When it comes to battery, the Apple tablet emerges with an en suite 42.5-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, which according to Apple can offer 10 hours of video playback and web use over wireless connectivity. But tests have shown that iPad 3 falls well short of what Apple projects. An in-house test by PCMag says that when compared to iPad 3, Asus Transformer Prime gives at least two hours more battery backup. Apple iPad 3 gives 5.4 hours battery backup, while Transformer Prime gives more than 7.3 hours battery backup.

Verdict

The comparison simply goes through the entire aspects of the new iPad and Asus Transformer Prime. It brings to you the major attraction points and shortcomings of the tablets. In a nutshell, it can be seen that both the Transformer Prime and iPad 3 are top products of their category, respectively the Android and iOS. So, it is ultimately up to you to decide which of iOS and Android you should go with. If you go for Android, you have other alternatives too for the Transformer Prime, however.
