When it comes to your store,
the shelves will be filled mostly with dollar merchandise. You may want to make room for a few closeout items too, to give your customers a more varied selection. However, it is important to understand dollar and closeout merchandise are drastically different.
Dollar store items obviously sell for very little, so you will not reap that much profit from them. However, this does not mean you can avoid selling it for the most part. Closeout items offer much better returns for your investment while providing customers with great deals in the process.
However, there is one significant disadvantage of closeout products. When compared to dollar merchandise, closeout products require much more effort on your part before you can stack them on the shelves. This is not the case with most of your other merchandise since it is packaged all nice and neat and ready to hit the shelves almost immediately.
You typically have to buy pallets and truck loads full of merchandise which is very different. Therefore, you need to take the time to sort everything out.
Some of the packaging may be damaged. You do not want to ask your customers to buy a product with a damaged package or worse. You may also be dismayed at the fact that some products will no longer have a package at all.
Closeout products are typically good deals to buy as overall the products as still in pretty good condition. This is not the case for all of them though since some will be damaged. It is vital for you to check all merchandise before you put it on the shelves if you do not want to disappoint your customers. Electronics definitely need to be checked since they may need new batteries before being put on the shelves.
After checking all of your closeout products thoroughly, you will need to repackage the items. After that, you need to determine how much you are going to sell all of the products for. Only then can you think about putting all of your new merchandise on the shelves.
As you can see, buying closeout items in addition to dollar merchandise can require much more work. As mentioned though, it is well worth the extra effort. Unlike traditional dollar items, the profit on closeouts can be very big. You can still afford to pass on great savings to your customers while still making a nice profit on your investment.
