DMX is a standard for communication between lighting equipment and controllers. DMX 512 is digital (it sends 1 and 0), unidirectional (one way only, from control to decoder, like moving head), serial (it sends 1 bit (1 or 0) at the time) protocol that was based on RS 485 (now EIA-485) specifications.
DMX512 controller is the lighting controller with DMX interface. In a DMX control system, there are two types of controller. First is master controller that sends out signal, and second is slave controller which receives the signal. They are connected by data cable. The slave will output PWM signal to the connected LED lights to achieve dimming and color adjustment. Each DMX system has 512 channels (addresses), which means one master can connect and control up to 512 slaves. It depends on the address quantity each slave occupies. The transmission distance between master and slave can be up to 500 meters. DMX512 controller is a perfect solution for intelligent building lighting control.
The master controllers are available in different styles. For complicated projects or professional lighting, the keyboard style DMX console is required. It has abundant functions which are suitable stage lighting, night club lighting etc. Another style is DMX USB interface master controller, which is also suitable for complicated projects. Simple and easy DMX masters now are available for home illumination, for instance, the touch panel style which enables full touch operation via one finger touch.
The DMX slave also means decoder, which receives signal from master. It can be available with AC-AC or DC-DC style and suitable for different types of LED lighting. Each decoder may take up 1 or more addresses depending on its PWM channel quantity. A decoder with 1 PWM channel is suitable for monochrome LED, and 3 PWM channels are suitable for RGB LED. The DC-DC style requires a power supply.
DMX512 controller offers not only basic on/off and dimming function, but also smooth color adjustment, dynamic color changing and zone control, which enable users to create versatile effects they would like and control different areas separately. Each R, G, B channel can be dimmed separately, thus to create millions of colors.
