Filtration is the process by which suspended particles are separated from the fluid. It can be done physically or mechanically. The structure of the basket strainer filtration equipment consists of three main parts namely the frame, the pressing unit and the filtering unit. Filtration takes place when the liquid usually called slurry which is of a milk shake like consistency is passed through a number of plates that are clamped to each other. The pressure inside the equipment moves the liquid between the plates so that the solid particles are separated and the filtered liquid is obtained. The maximum the pressure the better is the filtration. The plates can then be removed and cleaned. The filtration process can then be repeated. Thus a pure liquid can be obtained. The solid particles that are separated forms a dry cake which can be easily removed.

Its usage is extremely important in the food and beverage industries as the presence of solid particles in the food would make it dangerous for consumption.
