Kandivali is a village of large scale developments about 40 kilometers from the city of Mumbai. The area has old memories from the time the railway station, for which it was named, derived its original name.
Parts of Kandivali
There are two parts of Kandivali, East and West, that sprouted up on the either sides of the railway line. The boom of population happened when Gujarati families relocated to the area along the rail line, followed by the Parsis. The main reasons for them building homes across the western side were the beneficial climes and water availability. Until the thirties, the area had been largely agricultural with small scale trading; only with the advent of the eighties did the scene begin changing to the current residential real estate sector boom. The main area in Kandivali West is the Mahavir Nagar locality.
Current scenario
Kandivali has undergone a tremendous amount of change in the past few decades. Where there were only a few families in the area, there are high rises of apartments that are seen dotting the horizon of the locality. There are prominent churches, temples and mosques in the areas, some of them having their origins from the very inception of the town. There are industrial estates of Mahindra & Mahindra, printing press of Times of India and also the plant of Associated Capsules, which is the biggest manufacturer of empty capsules, in the world.
Civic Amenities and Facilities available
The major civic amenities such as hospitals, schools and transportation facilities are all available in the area. The Mumbai Suburban Railway Network, which separates Kandivali East from the west side, makes the area connected to the main city of Mumbai through the local train network. There are many taxis in the area along with the autos which help the population meet their transportation needs. There are major highways that connect the town with other cities of the state and the reasons why the first settlers arrived still remain to some extent.
The demand for the land here is much evident by the prices of land which reach up to Rs.15000 per square foot. The growing numbers of land development projects, the housing cities, major banks, malls and restaurants that have popped up in the town premises are also evidence. They have gone beyond building apartment buildings alone and gone off to develop estates of Kandivali East apartments.
