Let’s talk about the SOG base camp axe.

This is a relatively inexpensive item,SOG Base Camp Axes. Articles good for the budget, and intended to me used as the axe on call. It is a fairly average and common axe, used by many at camp sites to take care of an unexpected need for a heavy chopping tool, versus that of a normal weighted survival knife. This blade is said to need some sharpening uppn arrival, and so it would be a good idea to watch a you tube video on sharpening, unless you already have experience honing axe blades.

This item has a very simple and common design, The axe head is forged for solid strength, and has a flat rear axe head to be used as a heavy hammer for sinking pegs, or stakes into the ground. Even though this is a simple axe, it has been designed to be durable, reliable, strong, and offer comfort of use. The axe blade is contoured to offer less friction and grab while chopping so that the head is not getting stuck in the wood during strikes.

The axe blade has a full tang, and that is great for giving the owner confidence that the axe can handle some hard swings. The handle is co-molded to offer solid grip even in wet conditions. This is a raw forged axe, with a steel blade made of 1055c carbon steel, you will need to dry the axe after use.  The axe head steel is offering a Rockwell hardness scale level of 55. The axe has a length of 16 inches, and weighs in at 33 ounces. The length of the blade is 3.4 inches. The shaft of this axe is double curved, and it does lower down into a rubber molded handle, which at the bottom offers a lanyard hole.

We all know that a good trip camping first requires some good planning, and at least taking a simple axe like the SOG base camp along, will ensure you have a heavy tool if needed. This axe comes with a nylon sheath that is quite tough, and also comes with a belt clip. This axe actually is quite comfortable worn at the belt. It stays well secured, and does not get into the way of the user when clipped on.

To sum it up, this is a solid extra tool to have with you when camping, just to make sure you have a heavy cutting blade, as well as a heavy hammering tool in case of need.

Product retails for around $60.
