Technical Glossary of Spy Camera Terms

Here are some of the most commonly used technical terms and phrases associated with spy cameras, and their simple definitions:    CMOS---CMOS stands for Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor and refers to image sensors within a digital camera that convert light into electrons. CMOS sensors normally consume little power and are generally very inexpensive to manufacture. Many CMOS sensors have the same parity as the more expensive CCD sensors. These images are called frames. For security spy cameras, the lower the FPS, the poorer the quality of the picture.    Recording Format---Refers to a format for encoding data for storage on a storage medium.     mAh---Millamp Hours. This is describing the total amount of energy a battery can store at one time. With a higher mAh rating, a battery can power a device that requires more power or power a device for a longer period of time.     Lux---This is a measure of light intensity. In camera talk, lux refers to the minimum amount of light necessary for the camera to take pictures. The lower the lux, the more sensitive the camera.     IR LED---Infrared Light Emitting Diodes used to power devices such as remote controls. The particular wavelength that is transmitted by the infrared light tells the device what to do. Think of a remote control for your garage door or TV.    AV Out---Audio/visual out.     RCA---A type of electrical connector used to carry audio and video signals. May be called a phono connector or cinch connector.     Transmission Power---This term refers to the transmission of electrical energy from any power source on to an electrical load without using interconnecting wires. This power output is measured in milliwatts.    PAL/NTSC---This refers to two of the main television broadcast standards used around the world: PAL and NTSC. These are not interchangeable as they are incompatible, so PAL won't work in a country using NTSC and vice versa. NTSC video tape format will play in all USA video players.    GSM---GSM stands for Global Systems for Mobile communications and is the international standard for cell phone service.
