LED strip lights are widely used for decorative and accent lighting for residential illumination. To create the right mood for different atmospheres, a LED strip dimmer instead of a simple switch to control the strip is very important.

LED strip varies with voltage and color. It is available with different input voltages including DC 12V or 24V constant voltage input and AC 110V or 220V voltage input. It is also available with different colors including monochrome,Tips for Choosing The Right LED Strip Dimmer Articles dual color (warm white, cold white) and RGB/RGBW.  To dim and control the LED strip correctly, a correct dimmer is required.

Firstly, the dimmer should be designed with specifications that are in accordance with the strip lights, otherwise the dimmer and lights may be broken or burned out. Let’s take the most popular 12V led strip as an example, it is a constant voltage input LED lamp, thus you have to choose a LED strip dimmer with 12vdc constant voltage output that can match the strip. If the dimmer is designed with AC input, no power supply is required, just connect it to the main power. If the dimmer is designed with DC input, an AC to DC power supply is required for it. So does the 24VDC input LED strip. If the light is an AC high voltage input one, you have to choose a dimmer with AC output to match the input voltage of the light.

Secondly, the dimmer shall be able to control the corresponding colors of the light, and different controllers are required for different colors of monochrome, dual color and RGB/RGBW. Monochrome requires at least 1 channel output of the controller, dual color requires at least 2 channels output of the controller, at least 3 channels are required for RGB and 4 for RGBW. Some controllers in the market with 4 channels can control all those colors, what you have to do is consulting a professional salesperson before purchasing.

Thirdly, which dimming technology shall be used? Generally, for DC low voltage light, the most popular technology is PWM, and its advantage is smooth switching and dimming with no flickering. The dimmer is available with different PWM frequency, the higher the frequency is, the more smooth the dimming and switching will be. For AC high voltage light, the most widely used are phase cut dimming. Just consult a professional salesman before purchasing.

Fourthly, which control signal shall be used? RF wireless, DMX, DALI and 0-10V, you can choose according to your preferences. To use those signals, the dimmer you choose shall be able to receive the signals. Consult a professional salesman before choosing. Understanding those issues will be helpful to choose  the right LED strip dimmer.
