Tips for Renting a Secure Self Storage Unit

Self storage units are a great way to get things out of your home that you don’t need but don’t want to permanently get rid of either. And let’s face it we are a Nations of collectors. We tend to hang on to things in anticipation of needing them again someday or cling to things that we just aren’t ready to let go off that we know we will probably never need again.

If you need to declutter your home but don’t want to get rid of the clutter in the process, a self storage unit may be the solution to all of your problems. 

The biggest reason many people cite for not using an off-site storage unit is the fear that their property will be stolen and they won’t know about it. This is a valid fear if you choose a self storage unit that doesn’t have any security measures in place. To avoid this complication, simply be selective in what type of self storage unit you choose to use and use a check list to ensure your unit is secure.

First select a unit that has at the very minimum fencing all around it and a locked gate with a code those changes monthly for access in and out. This helps to ensure that only authorized people are getting in and out of the facility and it helps to ensure that if anything does go wrong the storage unit has a system in place to track who came and left and when.

Other added security features that you should look for include the use of security cameras around the facility at the gated entrances and exits. Cameras alone can discourage a potential offender from acting on a crime that is based on opportunity.

On site managers are also a huge bonus to look for. Having people live on site means there are virtually no windows of opportunity for a would be thief to gain entry undetected and there is someone there to call the police as soon as an unauthorized entry is gained or detected.

Other consideration factors are pricing and location. If you are planning to rent a unit for a long time you may be able to get a discount if you pay ahead of time or sign an agreement to be long term. Don’t rent a bigger unit than you anticipate needing and by the same token don’t rent a smaller unit than you need and try to get more into your unit than possible.

And finally consider the location. Don’t pick a unit that is in a high crime area or in an area that you don’t feel safe in. No amount of security features will make your unit safe in a crime ridden area. And don’t rent a self storage unit that is too far away from your home base. You will need to do an occasional check in of your unit so make sure you can conveniently get to it if needed.
