Proper window installs are required for optimum function. Here are steps to take.
Window installs are some of the more complicated DIY tasks that a homeowner can undertake. He or she must have adequate tools and savvy to competently perform the installation of new windows. If adequate expertise is not used with this project,
the unit may not work properly. The manufacturer may void the warranty if the product breaks due to inept installer errors. A smart DIYer will weigh the difficulty of the job against his or her skills. If it’s too difficult, it would be better let the pros handle it.
Steps for installing windows in a home:
- Rough opening: If this is a replacement, measure the space to make sure the new device will fit. There should be ¼ inch clearance beyond the size of the framed glass. If a new opening is being cut, measurements need to include this extra clearance room.
- Level bottom: The bottom of this cutout will need to be level as this will determine whether the framed glass is even or askew.
- Square & plumbed: The entire space within the opening must be plumbed, square and well cut.
- Weather resistant barrier: In order to keep Mother Nature from leaking in, a resistant barrier must be used. This can be a moisture-proof sill flashing and dam.
- Sealant application: A thin bead of sealant should be placed on the outer edge, with window face down. Place product in opening and temporarily attach with nails. Make certain everything is level, even and square.
- Attach: When it’s evident that the framed glass is in the proper position, attach with permanent fasteners. Nails should be hammered in every 12 inches in order to keep it securely affixed.
- Flashing tape: In order to begin finishing this installation, flashing tape must be affixed to the device.
- Insulate: Filling the excess space around the window with insulation will keep the product snugly in place without air moving through. Spray insulation may be the simplest application because it can be squeezed into tight spaces.
- Interior finishing trim: Interior trim needs to be placed inside the home in order to achieve a finished look.
- Exterior finish: Use masonry, siding or whatever product is on the house in order to achieve a professional look. Repaint as necessary.
- Cleaning the glass: Now it’s time to remove all stickers and debris from the new windows. It’s important to use gentle but effective cleaners as this product is fragile. Household glass cleaner is adequate. Vinegar and water is also an effective homemade product. No abrasives, chemicals or harsh products should come in contact with the surfaces.
Placing new windows in a home can give the whole place an updated look. Large ones can fill the interior of the abode with light and change the atmosphere to a more spacious and open one. The installation of double paned, energy saving windows will cut down on utility bills and keep the temperature within the dwelling more comfortable year round. For Energy Star products, tax credits may apply. Window installs are complex home improvement tasks suitable for a skilled DIYer or should be left to a professional.
