In 1865 this company was started by Georges Favre-Jacot. He was 22 years old at that time. The company was started in Le Locle in the canton of Neuchâtel. In November 1999, Zenith was purchased by LVMH. Then it became one of the several brands in their watch as well as jewelry division. Today the CEO of the company is Aldo Magada. In 2014 he had replaced Jean-Frédéric Dufour. Zenith enjoys a long reputation for quality as well as precision of their watches. There are very few Swiss watch manufacturers that are still producing their own movements in-house. Zenith is one of them.

It was in 1969, that the El Primero caliber was first released. It is still produced today. At that time it was one of the first automatic chronograph movements. It has a frequency of 36,000 alternations per hour (5 Hz). It is because of this high rate that a resolution of 1⁄10 of a second is allowed. There is also a potential for greater positional accuracy as compared to the more common standard frequency of 28,800 alternations per hour (4 Hz).

This El Primero was honored with a 2012 release of the El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th. This was limited to 1,969 pieces. This number was in honor of its original release date, 1969. It housed that same 36,000 vph movement. It also had a sub-dial that was measuring in tenths of a second in order to be able to make a complete rotation every ten seconds.

Georges Favre-Jacot was born 1843. He died in 1917. During his youth he was an apprentice within the watch making industry. At some time he requested that a house should be built for him at Le Locle. He asked for it from the architect Le Corbusier. Zenith watches nurture an enterprising spirit. They are pushing limits over and over again.
