At this important time in your personal and professional life, after obtaining your degree, you will be looking for graduate jobs and what you do now will impact on the rest of your career and your life.A vital part of this process is your CV and getting it right.

My top five ways to achieve this are as follows:

  • Take great care with your spelling when writing your CV. Proof read it and use spellcheck and also ask someone else to check it in case you have missed an error. Computers will underline in red any mistakes and a recruiting manager will identify those on a hard copy,so whichever way you apply you will fail to impress.

  • When applying online, you may be tempted to overstate your achievements but a trained interviewer will see through this if you gain an interview and will think less of you.Be truthful and accurate so that you are considered honest and professional.

  • If a recruiter has to work hard to read your CV your chances of getting an interview are unlikely,so use standard fonts, such as Arial or Times New Roman and do not use italics.

  • Similarly,Looking for a graduate job? Don`t make CV mistakes. Articles do not change fonts or sizes, which can happen if you are writing your CV over a period of time. You do not want to appear as someone who lacks care and attention when completing an important task, which may fail to get you to the interview stage.

  • Make your CV a continuous record of your experience and achievements. Gaps in it without explanation will be noted and frowned upon, so if there are any they should be included to avoid you appearing devious and dishonest.

Even though you may possess excellent skills, they may not lie in the field of CV writing. If this is the case, you should get professional help and many CV services can be found online. In this way you will be able to present a professional, well written CV and so greatly increase your chances of finding the graduate jobs you desire.
