The aspect of your life journey that causes you most concern may be your career, your financial situation, your family or other relationships. It is so easy to be distracted and veer off course. Sometimes the departure from our life plan is so gradual that we hardly notice it until matters become very serious. The questions and steps outlined below will help you to get back on the road to your goals.
Ask the question - How did I get here?
· Carefully examine the many steps that you took, leading up to your current position
o What decisions did you make?
o What steps did you take and what steps did you neglect to take?
o What short and long-term goals did you pursue and what attitudes fuelled your pursuit of those goals?
o What advice did you take and what counsel did you disregard?
If you continue doing as you have always done, you will continue to get the same outcome as you have always got. If you want a different outcome, then you need to change the inputs. Every action and attitude is a seed sown for your future. Whether we like it or not, we will reap what we have sown. If we sow a field of weeds, then we will reap only weeds irrespective of our desire to reap good crops. We cannot undo the seed sowing of yesteryear, but we can start from today to plant new, better seeds. The new seed will soon begin to germinate and along with them a new brighter future will emerge.
Then ask - How do I get back to where I came from or move on to a better place?
· After carefully examining the steps that you took which led to your current position, consider what might be the opposite of each of those steps and start taking this opposite course of action from today.
o If you can’t reverse the decisions which have already been made, at least decide to make the opposite decision, the next time a similar situation arises
o Abstain from taking the steps that you took before and begin to take those steps that you neglected to take
o Pursue the opposite of those short-term goals because they have proved by your own experience not to be compatible with your long-term objectives. Perhaps even your long-term objectives need to be revised at this stage
o Think back to the advice that you took and consider how it contributed to your going so far off course. Now reflect on the advice that you neglected to take and consider if taking it at this stage would lead towards a better outcome.
