Arthur Dale suggests 5 reasons why portable netbook computers are currently riding a wave of popularity.
5 Reasons Netbooks Are Popular
Perhaps the most interesting phenomenon of the netbook craze is that notebook computers can now be referred to as 'traditional.' Technology marches ever onward, and people quickly begin to express their preferences once new machines are available. In the case of netbook mobile computing, the reasons for popularity are not just easy to understand, but easy to get excited about.
Reason 1 - Ultraportability
Netbooks are small. They typically weigh less than half the average notebook, and generally take up little more space than a trade paperback novel. Netbooks are much easier to pack and move, and are efficient in crowded public areas.
Reason 2 - Price for Power
Netbook computers appeal to students, particularly those at a college level. The portability of these computers allows them to be used in class or in-transit, simplifying a student's life. Mobile and cheap, the netbook again wins out here.
Reason 3 - Flexibility
While the number of netbooks using a Windows based operating system is increasing, many use a variant of the Linux operating system. Given Linux's relative obscurity compared to Windows, it's not as susceptible to the legion of viruses that sometimes plague windows users. Having a Linux OS preinstalled is a handy option for those looking for an alternative to Uncle Bill's Windows.
Reason 4 - Efficiency
The perception of netbooks is of a stripped down, bare minimum capability machine, but this is not quite accurate. What netbooks are is efficient. They frequently include webcams, microphones, full office-style software suites and more. A netbook can be just as flexible as a notebook, given the right user.
Reason 5 - Style
A great deal of the appeal of a netbook comes from the stylishness of the whole thing. It's small, sleek, trendy and cool. People make fashion statements with their cars, why not their personal computer as well? Netbooks appeal to the user who wants to be just a little different, to stand out from the crowd.
