First of all we would like to mention that in this new release AX is open for Public Sector and Fund Accounting. This is in addition to its tradition industries, such as Manufacturing (both process and discrete), Distribution, Retail, Service (including Media, Entertainment, Professional Services).
There are additions to Enterprise Portal in the form of Expense Management, Requisitions, Vendor and Customer Self Service, etc. We were impressed with improvements to metadata new objects creation via intuitive user interface and select, drag and drop techniques. Let’s us share what we found interesting from the realm of custom development for AX:
1. Creating new tables and placing them on the new form in Metadata. There is no need to do any X++ coding, new tables and relations could be created via user interface. Then you create new custom form, select its type (for example the one to bear the grid) and then you place fields from your custom tables on the form (grid you associate with the query). If required some of the field in the tables could be pictures. If you do have graphical resources – they will be shown in the form of your item preview again all without code
2. Modification is available for both Windows Client and Enterprise Portal (web client). Directly from Metadata tree you can now create menu and publish it on the selected page of your Enterprise Portal. This action will create the link on the page and new web page with exactly the same grid, fields and style (assuming you are familiar with what are restrictions of the HTML page). So, technically saying, if all you need to do is to create custom tables and their presentation (possibly linked to real production table) – all that could be done without X++ coding directly in Metadata. And this modification is available in both Windows and Web client interfaces. But this is not all, keep reading
3. How about SSRS? Very good point. Metadata is available as in MorphX as well as in Microsoft Visual Studio projects. If in Visual Studio you create new Reporting project, and then create dataset with the query from the Metadata – the report itself could be produced in the matter of ten minutes (to give you some time to play with the layout)
4. Enable Custom Query as Web Service. This feature was also demonstrated and then your newly created web service could be used in such familiar application as Excel. Of course, Excel is the way to make it sound for the majority of accounting professionals. However, as you know web service could be called from non Microsoft Windows operating system, such as Apple, Android, Linux, Oracle and Java World, especially when you are looking in Dynamics AX (formerly known as Axapta) to be implemented for large publicly traded corporation
5. Is MorphX and X++ programming staying or going away? It is staying, but the need to program everything in X++ is deemphasized. Preferred way, as it was understood by our programming team is to create all the custom objects in Metadata and then, if required animate them with X++ code. Of course, the demos are well prepared and orchestrated with featuring what might look cool, and playing down possible underwater stones. So, the best approach is probably to wait until version 2012 is finally released (and supported with couple of service packs). We still believe that our MorphX X++ programmers do not have to think that they need to file unemployment insurance claim somewhere in the foreseeable future. We’ll keep you posted, please keep an eye on our future publications
6. Some words to international customers. The good news is the fact that AX is available in major foreign languages and localized in major foreign countries. However this is upper mid-market Corporate ERP application, which dictates higher implementation cost comparing to small business accounting packages, such as SAP Business One, QuickBooks, Peach Tree. So, prior to calling on AX implementation, we recommend you to set aside the budget for the software licenses and consulting hours
