Microsoft Dynamics GP, or how it was known historically – Great Plains Dynamics doesn’t have native support for such POS devices as barcode laser scanners, signature capturing and credit card processing devices.

Dynamics GP by its nature is Corporate ERP application,Dynamics GP Point of Sale Extensions Articles where you see such functionalities covered as General Ledger, Inventory Management, Sales, Purchasing, Payroll, etc.  Point of Sale support requires either dedicated Retail Management application (we will review Microsoft RMS and Counterpoint as the options), or it requires extension for one or several of Dynamics GP Sales Order Processing screens to be opened for POS devices (there are several add-ons available through Dynamics GP ISV channel, or you can do it with moderate custom programming).  Let’s review the paragraphs:

1. Dynamics GP and external Retail system.  You should review the integrations between the two, as the functionalities in such Retail applications as Microsoft RMS, Counterpoint overlap with the functionality realm in Dynamics GP.  For example, all three systems allow you to do merchandise purchasing and receipts (with the option to print barcode labels at that point), inventory adjustments, moves between the stores and even do Sales transactions (where Dynamics GP doesn’t directly support POS devices in native version, but SOP Transaction form in GP gives you comparable to POS transaction functionality, assuming that your POS clerk is trained to enter invoice, items, quantities, discounts and customer payment).  The advantages of having the records (POS transactions, Purchase Receipts, Inventory Adjustments and Transfers) integrated to Dynamics GP – are better and more flexible reporting (combining financial info with sales items and quantities, etc.), ability to incorporate retail stores on several Retail Application platforms (in the case when you are expanding, especially in such business model, as restaurants network, country deli stores).  However, maybe these and other advantages do not give you real value of Retail application to be synchronized with Dynamics GP Distribution modules.  In this case, you can simply deploy standard integration from Microsoft RMS to Dynamics GP (Microsoft Dexterity codes chunk), which moves POS transactions directly to GL and Purchase Receipts into AP module (where you can cut checks and mail them to your suppliers).  The same is possible if you are deploying Counterpoint at POS – it exports AP and GL transactions; Counterpoint exports them in the CSV text files and you should deploy Dynamics GP Integration Manager to integrate these files to General Ledger and Payable Management modules respectively

2. Now, let’s assume that your POS requirements are very simple and you do not need (or feel that you do not have to) to implement professional POS and Store Management System.  Instead you would simply like to open GP Sales Order Processing form for POS transaction and Credit/Debit Card, Cash or Check payment.  If you really have no concerns about such typical retail features as items on sale with percent discount (day from – day to, rounded to nearest 99 cents), manufacturer discount coupons and your average POS transaction requires Sales clerk to be really retail consultant (where each one spends up to 30 minutes, listening the customer and suggesting appropriate items to be selected into shopping cart).  In this scenario, you may simply install Dynamics GP user workstation at each cash register (Microsoft Windows computer), attach inexpensive USB barcode scanner, signature capture and credit card processing device (this combination has numerous and really inexpensive Dynamics GP Add-ons, enabling CC processing) and train your cashiers how to compile Invoice in SOP transaction entry screen.  If you think that your POS transaction volume might be approaching ten or more per hour per cash register, we recommend you such POS add-ons for Great Plains as Compass, please, see their website for further info

3. Custom Microsoft Dexterity programming to enable Dynamics GP for simple POS.  As you might be aware – existing Dynamics GO ISV add-ons, including the opens dedicated to POS are coded in so called Great Plains Dexterity.  Commercial product, coded in Dex should support all or the majority of POS devices and barcode scanners.  Naturally, that overall compatibility drives the price for the POS add-ons up.  In your case you may have only one or few models of Symbol scanner and Infogenics credit card processing devices.  If you have only few devices in us and to be supported in the POS extension, you might get POS extension cheaper via programming in in Dexterity directly
