Dynamics GP Reshaping User Homepage, Navigation, Links

In fact, your homepage as well as your entire interface with navigation pane, series content panes, list with action pane, message bar, information pane are in your disposition to make your preferred alterations.  There some restriction, for example, if you decide to change your Role (select another one from the list of predefined roles or start over with Basic home page) system gives you warning that all your custom settings, made to the page will be will be removed (in Quick Links, Metrics, Outlook Settings, the rest should stay).  You home page is something which we recommend you for your own judgment and self-discovery as it is intuitive.  Let’s begin:

1. Customize This Page link – it is normally available on the top right corner, just below the blue toolbar section.  Open this link, and we recommend you first to pick the role you like (not the one, which was probably assigned to you by GP technical consultant, who did install on your computer – we bet that the industry is Education and you are Accounting manager, this pair comes as default).  If you work for Non-profit industry in Payroll department, there is selection for you: Non-Profit/Payroll.  What role really does for you – it suggests you Quick Links (with GP forms you are using most often, in Payroll on the top should be Employee Maintenance), Metrics (in default installation you should have Microsoft Office Web Components, but when your consultant activates MS SQL Server Reporting Services reports, you should have more metrics options).  When you decided on your industry and position, let’s move on to the customizations

2. Mark Components to Display.  Some customers asked us to remove all the features from the home page.  You can do it right in this window by unmarking: To Do, Microsoft Office Outlook, Connect (this is web context, which could be suggested by Microsoft itself, plus you can have such options here as going directly to your Customer Source, search knowledge base, access training, etc.), Metrics, My Reports, Quick Links.  However we don’t recommend you to give up without making some efforts to break through the learning curve to open up virtually unlimited modification opportunities.  In version 2010 reminder could be shown as a Cue (the icon which grows in its size, when the attention deadline is approaching, please note that this Cue feature is not available for versions 10.0 and earlier)

3. Reshuffling components positions.  Currently version 2010 supports two columns style home page.  When you can decide to move Metrics from the right to the left and, say To Do from the left to the right

4. Modifying each section.  Let’s say you would like to alter your To Do section. Click on the link button next to the To Do.  Here you can change your Reminders, Tasks, plus decide to include Workflow tasks, and maybe Microsoft Workflow notifications (see you GP consultant or network administrator – if Workflow is implemented).  OK, I think that you got a lot of info for initial self-discovery, related to your home page.  Let’s move to toolbar

5. Customizing toolbars.  If you are on Dynamics GP 2010/11.0 version right click the mouse positioned on the toolbar blue area on the top, pop up menu should give you the suggestion to Customize (at the bottom of the popup menu).  Here for each item you can change icon (button image – with this version looks like you have to be happy to whatever predefined images can offer), move item up or down, show icon or text or both plus add dividers.  If you think that your customization went too far and you do not like the way it looks, feel free to reset toolbar (to its manufacturing settings)

6. Navigation Pane customization.  It is located on the left side of the user interface (sometimes we see that users removed it by clicking on the icon next to the right from info (?) icon on the right top corner).  If you removed your navigation pane, please enable it and right click your mouse in its area and on the popup menu select Navigation Pane Options.  Well this options are pretty restricted, you can uncheck the series to show up on the pane (for example, if you do not use Manufacturing series, uncheck it here).  Also you can move your favorite Series up and move down the series that you use only occasionally

7. Links – revolution in the Microsoft Dynamics user interface.  Old user interface in Great Plains Dynamics was oriented on using Toolbars and menus.  New interface (where Microsoft Dynamics project realizes the goals to unify user interface for the majority of Microsoft products, including Dynamics GP, AX, SL, NAV, CRM, as well as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, etc.).  When you select series in the Navigation pane, links are showing up on the upper section of the pane.  Let’s assume you are selection Financial series, and then click on Accounts to open Accounts link on the right side of the user interface (if you click on Financial button on the top – you will be opening Financial Content Pane with all its components: Transactions, Cards, Setup, Utilities, Routines, Reports, Inquiry).  By default each link has Action Pane, Filter Options, Information Pane, which you could uncheck to be shown.  Simply right click you mouse on the link name Drop Down List (on the gray horizontal bar between blue tool bar area and white/silver list area)
