This material is intended to multinational companies or US based mid-size company, expanding internationally, where their Corporate ERP application is Microsoft Dynamics GP, formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics.
We would like to cover also such aspect of international accounting application as localization for the region or specific country. New technologies, such as web sessions, VOIP (virtually free international phone and video conferencing service, good example is Skype) dramatically decreased the cost of ERP and MRP systems support Worldwide. If in mid and even late 1990th traditional consulting company had rented office in the targeted business metro, today we see the examples when the whole technical support operations are outsourced to the office in USA countryside or even in offshore locations. Also, with the trend to optimize the cost, even mid-size American, Canadian and European enterprises go internationally, where with the advantage of lower labor cost they also have to implement Accounting application for the overseas location. Now, let’s finish this optimistic header with the Dynamics GP licensing structure. If you already own Dynamics GP or older Great Plains Dynamics licenses, there is no limit on the number of companies, that you could create in your centralized Dynamics GP installation (likely to be centralized Corporate ERP MS SQL Server in the US headquarters). And for all your worldwide and regional offices you should consider hosting all the international companies databases in USA and providing Citrix or Terminal Server connections to the Client Servers (if you would like national languages to be used for the respected users, consider to have one Citrix server dedicated to the language: Spanish, for example). There is another option to have international offices connected over VPN, but with the current quality of high speed internet services, we would rather recommend Citrix. Let’s come down to details:
1. What is web session and how you can support Dynamics GP through that format? Well, web session allows remote engineer to connect to your user computer and even take control over the keyboard and mouse. There are multiple competing web conferencing providers, to mention Gotomeeting, WebEx, GotomyPC, etc. Typical web session provider gives you URL to connect to the web session via Microsoft Internet Explorer, plus conference phone number. If you are located in the USA, you can call in to the phone conference, but if you are located somewhere internationally, we believe that there is a better option for VIOP – Skype. By the way – if you have reasonably good internet connection internationally – our Skype enabled technician can expose his or her face via web camera to imitate locale presence scenario
2. Dynamics GP as your Corporate ERP for international expansion. Above we already mentioned the fact, that you can have unlimited number of companies in Great Plains. You may decide to increase the number of concurrent user licenses (in some cases international users may be working US night hours, when the concurrence level is not an issue). However the important question is – where you are expanding: Latin America, Brazil, China, Russia, Africa? And the important question is about Dynamics GP localization for your targeted country or the region
3. Corporate ERP Localization and where Microsoft Dynamics GP stands? Dynamics GP is currently localized in English speaking countries, plus in most countries or Spanish speaking Latin America, with reasonable coverage it is available in Arabic in Persian Gulf, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria. Historically we were observing a big battle of titans (such Corporate ERP vendors as Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Sage). Please, note that Dynamics GP is not localized in such countries as China, Brazil, Russia (user interface is available, but there is no guaranteed compliance to the tax code). Localization typically includes two components: local language support and compliance to the country business related legislation. There are several technologies, enabling foreign languages for Great Plains, but tax compliance seems to be the obstacle, when you think to implement Dynamics GP for the country, where it is not localized. You may decide to implement localized accounting system from one of the major ERP makers: SAP has Business One localized for the large list of countries and regions. Microsoft Dynamics AX (former Axapta) is also geared on the international Corporate MRP market. Consider consolidation on the level of Financial Reports (in FRx or newer tool – Microsoft Management Reporter)
