Great Plains Dynamics GP reporting tool selection depends on the nature of your report. We will give you highlights on report design tool selection and report designer or programmer skills set, required to design, modify and support reports.
Microsoft Dynamics GP is distributed and supported through Dynamics GP VAR or Value Added Reseller channel, and if you need help in reports design and implementation, first you should contact your VAR of records with Microsoft, or if you do now know who is your GP reseller, you can contact our office. Let’s begin with financial reporting:
1. FRx financial reporting. FRx has advantage, versus other tools, as it has preset link to your General Ledger and chart of accounts. FRx reports are based on two constructions: Row Format (where you specify ranges of accounts, budgets or even links to external Excel worksheets) and Column Layout, where you specify the nature of data to show in the column. In advanced FRx reporting you can use Reporting Tree, and doing so you can cross single company boundaries and create consolidated reports. In the tree you can supersede Row Layout and use special RL for each tree branch. Use FRx for Balance Sheep, P&L and Cash Flow Statement
2. Advanced Financial. If you need really very simple report, often when you are using Small Business Financials, you can use preconfigured BS, P&L and Cash Flow from GP Advanced Financial Reporting module. AF is really step down, comparing to FRx. If you use AF, please, be sure that your accounts have correct account category codes, as AFA reporting is based on account category classification
3. Great Plains ReportWriter. You have business logic specific standard reports here: Trial Balance, Aging report, plus you often have to modify RW SOP Blank Form report by adding your company logo. RW reports are very useful, but it is not that easy to create sophisticated custom report, as there is virtually no way to create parameters selection screen for it (assuming that you are not a Dynamics GP Dexterity programmer). Feel free to modify existing RW reports
4. Crystal Reports for GP. The best technique to create technically appropriate Crystal Report is to create base SQL View or Stored Procedure first and then deploy it as a data pulling tool for the report itself. Having said that, and considering the fact, that SQL Stored Procedure can join all the kind of tables, including the mechanism of temp tables creation – CR is really almighty. The only disadvantage of Crystal Reporting is the fact, that you always have to start from scratch, and so development time is longer
5. Excel, MS Access, SRS. In essence all these tools use data linking to MS SQL Server tables mid-ware, and as doing so – will do the job for you if you feel technical comfort working with them
6. Dexterity Reports. Dexterity developer can create reports of the RW nature and also create custom parameters selection window
