How to Set up a Remote Connection

Remote Desktop is a component that allows a desktop user the ability to access their PC from another computer that is in a different area.This remote connection will allow an individual access to their computer from virtually any other computer that has an internet connection.Using the remote computer, an individual will have the ability to run any program that is on their host computer.This includes all of the applications, files, and resources that are stored within the computer that is being accessed remotely.Step One: Setting up the Host Computer The first step when setting up a Remote Connection will be to set up the computer that is to act as the host with the proper software.In order to do this click on the start menu, go to the add or remove programs under this tab click on the add/remove Windows components.In this menu click on internet information services then details.Click the OK box next to the remote desktop web connection.A wizard will begin which will install an IIS web server.Step Two: Configuring Remote Connection on Host PC Next you will need to configure the remote connection on your host PC.This is done through the control panel.After entering the control panel you will click on performance and maintenance.Under this tab will click on the system icon.In this area there is a tab that is labeled remote.Simply check the box that says: allow users to connect remotely to this computer.A warning label may pop up; this is to ensure that the accounts have been assigned passwords.If passwords have not already been assigned, you will need to complete this step.Step Three: Test the Connection The final step in setting up a remote connection is to test it through the internet.This is best done from another Remote Computer that is near your host computer.The first step in the process will be to write down your unique IP address of your host computer.Next launch internet explorer from the computer that is being used remotely.Type in the URL: http://uniqueIPaddress:port/tsweb/, with the actual IP address of your host computer in place.An activex control may need to be installed.Connect on the page and you will have access to your host PC.It is important to close the browser window when finished using the host PC as this will disconnect.No passwords or usernames will be stored on the computer that was used, so there will be no way to access the information from the remote PC.Remember that IP addresses do change, so it is important to check this before attempting to connect.If access to the host computer is allowed to more than one user, only one person will be able to gain access at a time.If someone is already connected and another person tries to connect an error message will be received.
