When we are talking about assembly (or simple manufacturing, production) in relation to such mid-market Corporate MRP/ERP application as Microsoft Dynamics GP Great Plains, we do not expect complex implementation and user training, often associated with full featured Manufacturing suite of modules

Assembly could be implemented in Distribution Bill of Materials,Microsoft Dynamics GP Assembly Automation Notes Articles or in Project Accounting.  This publication should give you initial information, and we expect you to do the rest of your homework in Corporate ERP selection or Great Plains modules extension and assembly planning and implementation:
1. What is Distribution Bill of Materials (BOM) module?  This module was historically originally developed by Great Plains Software as extension to GP Inventory Control module.  In BOM you have Bill of Material master record (where you have the option to have phantom BOM and use as many phantom layers as you may need).  BOM naturally supports such features as Serial and Lot Numbers, it tracks all the history of assemble units (you can have inquiry or report on the serial or lot number of the components, this might be important for the businesses in healthcare, import/export, sea shipping, international trade, where regulation is compulsory).  Please, not that Dynamics GP Bill of Materials module is designed to fit to discrete manufacturing module only (if you are thinking about Process Manufacturing, such as in food, meat, poultry, mining related business, please consider Microsoft Dynamics AX Axapta or third party Dynamics GP ISV process manufacturing add-ons)
2. Dynamics GP Project Accounting.  Sometimes mid-market companies associate assembly or manufacturing on order with unique customer order, or in other words project, where you have to record revenue, expenses (such as installation labor, warranty repair, customer support calls billable time) and spare parts cost (typically non-billable under warranty contract or billable when warranty is already expired).  Obviously Bill of Materials module is not geared to serve these kinds of business processes and you should be looking at Great Plains Project Accounting module.  In PA you can also track budgets towards project category and phase.  Some excurse into Dynamics GP PA module history.  PA was originally developed by Philippines based Match Data Great Plains ISV Partner.  We would guess that in time it was a dilemma for Doug Burgum, Great Plains Software founder and CEO to pick the module to be adopted by GP between Intellisol Project Accounting (in my personal opinion this would be excellent choice, Andrew Karasev, Great Plains Certified Master, Intellisol Project Accounting and Advanced Purchase Order Processing Certified Consultant).  When acquisition went through, Match Data was transformed into Great Plains subsidiary in Philippines, which was alive till the end of 2003.  Now back to the focus
3. Dynamics GP Assembly implementation on the international market.  Microsoft Dynamics GP is localized in USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Spanish version is available for Latin America (excluding Brazil, as they speak Brazilian Portuguese), plus to some extent in Arabic World, South East Asia where English Language is used in business
