If you are in process of selecting small or mid-size business Corporate ERP application, we would like to give you some points about considering SAP B1. Traditionally MRP and ERP applications were concurring to each other in the field of modifications, exporting to Excel, EDI, simple integrations, this article is not technical - it is rather enlightening for SB1 readiness to custom extensions

We will be writing with SAP BO version 2007 conventions,SAP Business One Modification Notes: Selecting Corporate ERP Articles if you are on older version (2005A), it is also applicable with minor draw backs.  Feel free to request SB1 executive or technical demo, as Corporate ERP selection requires comparisons and a lot of homework:

1.       Forms adaptability.  Imagine Sales Invoice form, where you have Invoice header and Invoice Lines.  SB1 considers Invoice Line table as the scrolling window base, and here you can take away fields you do not need or include fields you would like to see.  This is how it works: Pull out existing invoice, or simply open Sales Invoice screen, click on Forms Settings icon on the tool bar, click on Table Format bar and here you have control over which field of the table to include and which to remove from the Invoice Entry form.  Now, we will give you a hint on how to add custom fields to the form, such as Business Partner.  Tools->Customization Tools->User Defined Fields Management.  Here expand Master->Business Partners->Business Partner and click Add, give new field a Title and Description, plus other options (outside of the scope for this publications).  Now Open Business Partner screen, pull existing customer or vendor (SB1 has them in the same table and screen), in menu select View->User-Defined Fields.  What happens is - you now see popup window with your newly added field to the right.  As you see - in both cases no custom programming is required, this modification could be done by your internal SAP B1 IT support people

2.       Custom Tables in SB1.  Here is another example of flexibility.  Let's assume that you need new object creation, which is hosted in User Defined Table, and you will be basing some of you custom Crystal Reports on the calculations in that table: Tools->Customization Tools->User Defined Table Setup - here give the name to the new table, then go to Tools->Customization Tools->User Defined Fields Management, select User Tables and add fields to the table.  At this point, you have new custom table and plus you have Interface to populate it: Tools->User Defined Windows, and find you new table interface ready there

3.       Additional SAP B1 tips.  This application has ERP (GL, AP, AR, Inventory, Service, Human Resources (doesn't have Payroll in current core version), Production/Manufacturing, MRP, Sales Opportunities, which is fact CRM module).  It is localized for long list of countries, and we recommend it if you are US based multinational corporation with distribution, manufacturing or sales offices in such countries as Brazil, Latin America, India, China, Philippines, Africa, Europe.  SB1 could be easily consolidated to such Corporate ERP systems as Microsoft Dynamics GP Great Plains, SAP mySAP, R/3.  In SBO you can switch interface language Administration->General Settings->Display, and here select your language

4.       Advanced Integrations and Customizations.  Here we first recommend you to check out SAP Business One Data Transfer Workbench for integrations, this tool is included with your SB1 purchase.  Typically you work with CSV files here, however it is open for ODBC connection to your custom MS SQL Tables and Views, call us for details.  If you think that you need advanced SAP B1 customization, we can help you with SAP Business One SDK programming and add-ons development
