As you argue with yourself about the pros of plimsolls over espadrilles while shoe shopping,Facts You Shoe-d Know Articles pause for a moment and thank the good Lord for the presence of footwear in your life. There used to be a time when shoes were not so variegated and stylish. True, they have been around for a really long time but the distinction between left and right footed shoes was made only in the early 19th century in Philadelphia. Boy, our ancestors must have had a rough time.

This fact by itself might have shoe-k you to the core but there’s so much more. You thought heels were only for women? Think again. Heels were first attached onto shoes for men. These were originally invented so that horse riders could stay in their stirrups. Going further back in history, heels were worn by actors who portrayed tragedy to demonstrate their superiority over comic actors. Rewind a little more and you have similar societal distinction in Egyptian society dictated by the difference in people’s shoes. The lower strata had to make do with papyrus sandals or no shoes at all while the rich trotted around in red or yellow colored pointed sandals.

Modern day shoe-making procedure is not so much a mimeograph of “The Elves and The Shoemaker” as it is a complex series of minute procedures. Cute little elves do not jump out of nowhere to work on shoes in the nighttime with tiny little needles as the shoemaker sleeps. In fact, a single shoe requires at least a hundred different operations to be made.

When it comes to naming shoes though, the tale is not so complex. The naming of some types is way more literal than one would expect. For example, owing to their cushioned rubber soles, sneakers allow the wearer to sneak around unheard and hence the name. Even flip flops are so named because of the customary repetitive sound they make while walking, but you already knew that.

It’s probably safe to assume that you are now a little bit wiser about your footwear and it’s history. So next time you’re buying shoes, you will realize that you are actually buying a product that has gone through several changes and modifications over the centuries to become the comfortable, trendy item it is today.
