Augusta is the capital city of Maine. Its population in 1950 was 20,913. It is on the Kennebec River. As early as the year 1628, there was a trading post known as Cushnoc where Augusta now stands, and in 1754 Fort Western was built there and a settlement grew up. In 1831 it was made the capital of Maine, and in 1849 it was incorporated as a city.
Augusta has abundant water and is a center for industries that need water, such as paper manufacturing and cotton goods. Near by is Hallowell, Maine, where famous granite is quarried, and the domed capitol building in Augusta is made of this gleaming white stone. Augusta is also the name of an important city in Georgia, on the Savannah River. Its population in 1950 was 71,508, and it is important in the cotton and textile businesses. Augusta is a popular vacation spot in the winter. President Dwight D. Eisenhower drew much attention to Augusta when it became his favorite place for rest and golf and a special house was built there for the Eisenhowers.
