Worldwide spending on IT is expected to reach $3.7 trillion (£2.3 trillion) in 2012, according to Gartner.
The research firm said spending will grow by 2.5 per cent on last year's total, with the 'midsized business' market outperforming all other sectors in terms of expenditure.

Although Gartner previously predicted an increase of 3.7 per cent for the current year, it claimed the revised growth rate reflects the strengthening value of the US dollar rather than an actual decline in spending.
"Early signs in 2012 suggest that the global economic outlook has brightened a little," commented Richard Gordon, research vice president at the company.

However, Gartner analysts also said spending on IT in the public sector looks set to contract "moderately" around the world in 2012 and 2013, mainly as a result of austerity measures in eurozone countries.
Earlier this year, research published by Boston Consulting Group stated that the value of the digital economy in the G20 nations is on course to reach $4.2 trillion by 2016.
