Do you know why people sing?  If man has to trace the origin of the singing behaviour means,Know the origin and meaning of the songs in nature Articles he has to travel back to the evolution of vertebrates.  Do animals sing?  If so what would be the purpose for which they sing?

Studies have shown that song is different from calls.  This piece of scientific evidence shows and supports the fact that animals do sing songs like humans.

The question to be answered is why human being sings songs?  Singing is one of the earliest behavioural traits assumes to have great value in expressing the feeling of joy, happiness and celebration etc.  The pre-historic man is believed to have sung songs in groups during different seasons of the year and is believed to be due to his joy or it was a form of thanking the nature for its kindness and benevolence.

With time, the song man was singing for himself for his happiness turned out to be his livelihood/need/recognition etc.    The affluent lot in the society and those who cannot sing so well started using the ‘singers’ for filling their inner joy.  Thereby, the culture of music grew in the society.

Then what about the songs in animal world?   Mostly, birds are the animals largely gifted with the singing ability.

One of the evolutionary reasons attributed for the singing behaviour of birds is mate selection.  It is known that male birds are the one who sing and based on the profoundness or depth of the ‘song’, the female bird select or reject him.  Only the healthy or disease free birds alone can ‘sing songs’ with high level of melody and beauty.  So goes the selection criteria of the female bird.

Why certain birds sing songs from the canopy of deep forest more so during non breeding season and apparently no mating chance is to be tested or proved.

The reason, man yet to understand is about the secret of bird’s singing behaviour during such occasions.   One may have to draw a parallel between the singing behaviour of man and birds to understand the mystery.

No man on earth we can find who does not ‘sing songs’ or have not sung any ‘songs’.  Although they may not ‘sing’ for others or may not like others listening to their song, but definitely sing in their solitude.  While bathing or otherwise, they ‘sing’ and hum from within.   By doing so, they also derive great pleasure.   They also may stop singing the when they become aware of the fact that others are listening to their ‘song’ or watching them.

Some birds also do sing when they are alone in the deep forest.  Why should we deny the fact that they are not singing due to their inner joy or singing during such occasion is only the expression of their inner joy.   Perhaps, birds may also love solitude and sing for their soul.  These birds also stop singing when they notice that someone is watching them.  They also may feel shy like many ‘bathroom singers’ and hence stop singing when someone notice them.

The only interesting aspect yet to be established is about whether birds also sing for their livelihood/need/recognition like man or do they sing exclusively for the sake of song.

No doubt, birds do enjoy the beauty of the nature and sing song in privacy.  The song for pure joy or song for money, which is true art and who is the true musician, let you decide.
