'More colleges not the answer' (DC - Engineering College Chennai)

“Increase in number of private engineering colleges in the state will not help increase quality of technical education”, Anna University vice chancellor Prof. Mannar Jawahar said on Thursday.

Responding to a question about the increase in number of private engineering colleges in the state in the recent past,'More colleges not the answer' (DC - Engineering College Chennai) Articles Prof Jawahar said that the state government had written to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) two years ago urging them to stop approval of new engineering colleges in the state.

“Despite urging the AICTE to stop granting approval for new engineering colleges the councilhas cleared the proposal for new engineering colleges last year also”, he said.
Replying to another question about lack of infrastructure in private engineering colleges, the vice-chancellor said that the university provides affiliation to colleges based on several parameters like pay scales of faculty.

“If any college does not have anything stipulated for affiliation we don’t affiliate them”, he added.Prof Jawahar also informed that the university had received several complaints from students about colleges imposing fine for various issues, including lack of attendance.
“Whenever these issues come to our notice we call the college management and sort out the
