You can never predict a disaster, however you can practice some of the skills that you might need. No one wants to run head first into a disaster just to practice, so how then can you practice the necessary skills without getting into an actual disaster?
Practice being in a disaster? Are you mad?
As they say, “Practice makes Perfect” and this is applicable in almost everything in life even in survival situations. So, how can you practice survival if you're not actually in a disaster? It's not like you want to go running head first into a disaster just to practice, right?
No. However, there is a way to practice the "skills" you might need to use, even if you never need to actually use them.
It's true that an emergency situation can happen unexpectedly. When it does, it demands your immediate action. There are things that you can do to practice skills that might be the difference between life and death.
Constantly test your gear
Can you imagine relying on items that you thought would help you during a survival situation, only to discover that they don't work. What about a tool that requires a special skill and you've got no idea how to use it?
Not understanding your kit, or having items that fail in the field in a desperate situation is like a double disaster.
To avoid this from happening make sure that you know how to operate your survival gear. You should be comfortable when using all the tools. The best way to achieve this is to head out on a camping trip, or stage a mock survival situation. This is a fun and safe way to test everything out.
Why not go camping in the local area and completely rely on your gear for 72 hours. If things fail you know you can always go back home!
Knowing how to operate and be comfortable with your gear doesn’t mean that you have to stop testing it once you know how it works. You should constantly do this and make sure that you're proficient and the items are in good working order. If the time comes to actually use it you'll have the confidence knowing it all works perfectly.
Practice Survival Skills
Your survival doesn’t just depend on the contents of your survival kit. You should also practice basic survival skills like how to build fire, navigation, how to make signals and especially first aid. There are guides and manuals out there which you can read to help you become educated in this area.
The first thing to practice is first aid. While some of us hate the thought of having to dedicate a few week nights to learning first aid, imagine how useful this could become if you need to patch up people even yourself.
A disaster situation can strike anywhere at anytime and if you want to get through it you need to be prepared and there’s no better way to be prepared than to practice.
