Why So Many Find Learning Demanding - Are We Using The Wrong Approaches?
It’s said that we as humans are the ultimate in learning machines. It's that talent that has allowed us to do so much. Our development of learning techniques has meant we have been able to survive and evolve. So if it's so natural, why can it be so difficult?
It’s said that we as humans are the ultimate in learning machines. It's that talent that has allowed us to do so much. Our development of learning techniques has meant we have been able to survive and evolve. We learn from our experiences,
from our situation and, perhaps most significantly, from other people who have learned before us.
So why can it be so difficult?Notwithstanding all this, learning still represents a challenge for many of us. In the modern world, we are so often presented with huge volumes of facts and ideas that we have to learn and comprehend. Learning it all seems an impossible task, and we tend to steer clear of the unpleasant activity as much as we can!But it doesn't need to be like that. The problem arises with how we actually go about organizing our studying - we are using the incorrect techniques.
What are we doing wrong? The way we are used to going about understanding and storing large quantities of information is to sort it into classes and compartments. That's fine, until the time comes when we need to recover the information. Finding it then becomes the problem. Our index scheme doesn’t work so well, because we don’t understand the information we’ve stored away. The difficulty flows from the fact that we do not actually organize our memory system in that way.
What is a better way?The power of the brain is a result of the many millions of links that have formed between individual brain cells. Learning causes those links to grow and extend - and it's this that gives the clue as to the learning and studying skill-sets that we ought to be looking at.If we can organize our learning methods in the same way as our brain - to see knowledge as a network of interrelated facts - our understanding and learning will be working with, rather than against, our brains. What results is a structure onto which new knowledge can be fixed, and understanding is improved because we can see how data and ideas relate to each other. These sorts of learning methods can only help to boost the efficacy of our learning - and may even make it enjoyable after all.
So how to find out how to do thisThere are many courses now to be had that will teach you these skill-sets. If you were unfortunate enough to have had teachers at school who didn't understand all this, these methods will be quite new to you - and they could be difficult to understand at first. But because we now have access to the internet, all the information you need is readily obtainable. If you have found studying to be a challenge, take some time to discover a new way of learning.Take some time to research the Internet, maybe visit some of the specialist sites that will guide you through the many courses available - it will be time well spent.
