NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will showcase the original work of Patricia Wallace in the "Illumination: An Exhibition of Fine Art Photography." The exhibition opens on May 19, 2017, and runs through June 8, 2017, with an opening reception on Thursday, May 25, from 6-8 pm.
Patricia Wallace is a master at blending the realms of fine art photography, historical documentation, and digital collage. Her unique approach involves taking vintage photographs and subtly modernizing them without introducing drastic changes like new colors or superimposing her own hand. Instead, Wallace's work draws its power from nuanced differences in scale, repetition, and focus. For instance, she magnifies crucial details from old postcards or photographs, creating a new narrative by juxtaposing these elements. In one series, she collects staged, romantic scenes of men kissing women on the cheek into a single frame, telling a fresh story. Another composition features a repeated newspaper photograph of wartime damage, starkly contrasted with a contemporary portrait.
Wallace's original photography offers a vivid glimpse into the most vibrant corners of Tahiti. Her images capture the sea at sunrise, traditional dancers, and rolling fields of crops in full color and rich texture. Born in Britain, Wallace has lived all over the world before settling in her current home of Tahiti, where she has held several solo exhibitions in Papeete.
