April is the fourth month on our modern calendar. On the Roman calendar, April was the second month. The month got its name from the Roman word aperire, which means "to open." April, therefore, is the month in which things begin to open. Plants and trees begin to blossom.

An English poet, Robert Browning, wrote this about April "Oh, to be in England Now that April's there, And whoever wakes in England Sees, some morning, unaware, That the lowest boughs and the brush-wood sheaf Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf, While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough In England—now!" Many other great poets have written poems about April. April is also known for its warm showers, which help the plants to grow in the spring, and that is the reason for the saying, "April showers bring May flowers." The diamond is the birthstone for people who were born in April, and the sweet pea is the flower of April.
