Take the stress out of going back to school with these sizzling organizing tips.
How about a big bouquet of freshly sharpened yellow pencils to get you in the mood for going back to school? In the movie “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan that is what he said reminded him of fall. I thought that was so charming.
Before you dash out and start buying all the school products at your local variety store here are some basic organizing tips for back to school.
1. If you have had an unstructured summer where the kids could get up whenever they felt like it, it will be quite a shock to suddenly be woken up at an early hour and to be happy about it. Start waking the kids up at their earlier time a couple of weeks before school starts. This helps them to get back in the routine of waking up early. Of course you want them to get the amount of sleep they need so have them go to bed earlier.
They may grumble about this as school hasn't started so talk with them before you start having them set their alarms earlier and get their corporation.
2. How many pens, pencils, and bottles of glue and rolls of tape do you honestly need? The ads make it so inviting to march off to the store and stock up on all these items. Before you do go shopping take a look in your drawers and see what you already have. Buying extra to have on hand and to save money is a good idea, plan ahead where you will store the extra supplies.
Create a central location in your home for rulers, a stapler, hole punches, pens, pencils and notebooks. When doing homework the kids will know exactly where to go to get their supplies. If they do their homework in their room the supplies they use most often can be kept in their desk drawer.
3. Create a master list on a calendar and sync it with everyone's calendar. Do this as soon as you get the school calendar of events for the year. This way you can request time off from work for the important school events you don't want to miss.
Even though you may have the latest electronic gadgets you use for your calendar create a family calendar on paper and post it where everyone can see it. Encourage kids to write their activities here so events won't be missed and everyone can coordinate their schedules. Remember to put everything on your personal calendar also.
4. Have fun with school starting. If you're a bit down that your baby is starting school plan to go out to lunch with some friends or take a walk and enjoy a quiet moment before all the kids get home from school.
During the year tuck little notes in their back pack where they will be sure to find it telling them how proud you are of them and you're happy they are working hard in school.
Take the stress out of school starting by planning ahead and getting organized by designating places for school supplies and using a family calendar.
