Diabetes rash is an early symptom of diabetes that can be noticed before a person is even diagnosed for the disease. A diabetes rash is a warning signal for diabetes. Skin rashes that occur in diabetes are also called diabetic dermadromes. About 33% of diabetics are likely to experience skin rash at least once in their life time.
Causes of Skin Rash in Diabetics
The obvious cause of skin rash among diabetics is the lack of care. A diabetic has an increased risk of developing a skin rash if he/she:
- has an infection caused due to the growth of fungus,
- has an infection caused due to bacteria,
- reacts to an allergy,
- has disseminated Granuloma Annulare,
- experiences thickening of arteries and
- Has Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum.
Most diabetes rash fungal infections are caused due to Candida albicans,
a yeast-like fungus that can be a source of itchy rashes of moist and red areas surrounded by tiny scales and blisters. Although, several kinds of bacteria cause diabetes rash, staphylococcus is the most common cause of the rash.
Sometimes, insulin that is taken through an injection or in the form of pills can become allergic to the skin and this kind of a bump or rash can be allergic to the skin.
A form of rash that appears like a ring on the skin is caused by Disseminated Granuloma Annulare, which is most commonly seen to affect the ears and fingers.
Thickening of the arteries, which is common in diabetics, can lead to a rash on the legs. This type of rash is often referred to as a diabetes leg rash. The affected skin changes colour and appears as if it is shining because of the narrowed blood vessels.
Symptoms of Diabetes Rash
Rash because of Fungal Infection
Fungal infection may appear at the webbing of the toes and fingers, beneath the armpits and breasts, groins, under the foreskin and corners of the mouth.
Rash because of Bacterial Infection
Symptoms of rash because of bacterial infection includes stypes, boils, infection of the hair follicles, infection around the nails and deep infection on the tissues beneath the skin.
Rash because of allergy to pills or insulin
Some of the symptoms of rash due to allergy to insulin or pills include bump and rash on the skin.
Rash because of Disseminated Granuloma Annulare
Some of the symptoms of rash due to disseminated granulomas annulare include rash on the fingers and ears.
