Disney Princesses 101

Many adults can not keep up on the growing trend of little girls obsessions with the Disney Princesses.  Here's a simple guide to understanding who they are and their mass appeal around the world.

There are 5 main Disney Princesses:  Cinderella, Snow White, Belle or Beauty, Aurora or Sleeping Beauty, and Ariel or the Little Mermaid.  There are other princesses that are widely known, like Jazmin, Mulan, Rapunzel, and Pocahontas.  There will be many more princesses in times to come, including a new African American princess that will be released this year in the movie called the Frog Princess.  The main character, Maddy will be the first African American princess ever in Disney movie history.  Many critics agree that since Disney has released movies of all ethnicities, it's about time that there is a black princess.

As a favorite around the world, Cinderella, in her signature blue dress, is a positive roll model for little girls.  She is the most sought after character and sales of Cinderella products like dress up clothes, stickers, sound tracks, books, and DVDs soar to almost double of any other princess.

Snow white, with her soft spoken appeal, and beautiful singing voice has charmed young and old alike.   Her red, yellow, and blue dress are stunning to little girls.  Many kids love Sleeping Beauty because of her pink dress and Ariel because of her stunning red hair and beautiful singing voice.  Princess Belle has charmed little girls with her smart and loving ways.  She looks beyond the outside appearance of her true love and finds the unexpected there.

The princesses have created a multi-million dollar empire.  Many little girls are obsessed and long to have a pretty Disney princess party with everything pink, princess dress up trunk filled with dresses and accessories of their favorite princess.  You will find nearly all stores sell princess apparel and clothing.  Some little girls even have princess computers, cell phones, and computer games.  Online princess games are a huge industry as well.

As for the additional princesses, they are somewhat popular as well, but have not stood the test of time.  Many of them tend to stand in the background to the main 5.  Some of them, like Mulan and Jazmin are among the main 5 at Disneyland to meet and greet anxious little girls with autography books in hand.  Jazmin even has a play in California Adventure, called Alladin.

Now that you are up to speed on the princesses, you have a better idea why little girls love them so much.  Their unmatched beauty, wits, and loving nature are traits that kids can identify with and want to emulate.
