During the divorce proceedings it will be determined which parent is given custody of the children. The other parent (non-custodial), will usually be given child visitation rights. Then at the final divorce appearance, a visitation rights schedule will be prepared. This is a term used to describe the right of the non-custodial parent to visit with his or her child.

Child custody visitation grants the parents the opportunity of developing a healthy relationship with their child. A court order allows for changes to the visitation schedule based on unusual circumstances.

In cases where the parents fail to reach an agreement on sharing time with their children,Get Child Custody Visitation Articles it is up to the courts to set a visitation schedule. A court arranged schedule will set the times and places the non-custodial parent may visit with their child. Also, if the courts intervene, they may decide it is in the best interest of the child to grant sole custody to only one parent, rather than allowing access rights to both. This situation might happen if the court determines that contact with the non-custodial parent might endanger the child.

The courts believe that child development is an evolving relationship with both parents, so they are reluctant to restrict the visitation rights with the non-custodial parent. It is not unrealizable to expect the court to place certain requirements on the visitation restrictions such as requiring supervision by a third-party, or even requiring that the visitation occur at a particular location or specific time.

I can not stress enough the importance of the visitation schedule. It helps to insure that your child visitation rights will continue. Here are some steps you can take to keep your rights.

Be on time for pickup and return

Both parents should have input into where the visitation transfer should take place unless the court has ordered this to occur at a specific time and location. You, as a parent, should try to always be prompt.  Delays are not to be taken lightly. It is possible that scheduled events have been planned and any delays when picking up or returning the child will only cause friction.

Create a Schedule for Vacation and Holiday Visits

Everyone should agree on the holiday visitation schedule. You will need to be flexible with these schedules. Visitation requirements for holidays such as Mothers Day and Fathers Day require some extra planning so proceed accordingly. Some dates such as the Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation and holidays should also be given special attention. Be flexible during these holidays. You will have to share the kids at spring breaks and summer vacations so be prepared for some extra planning on this.

Focus on the Children

It should be important for the parents to place their children ahead of their own interest. A close and loving relationship with both parents is important to the child but the practicalities of promoting and maintaining such relationships can be a real challenge. Keep the visitations interesting, enjoyable and for the benefit of the child.
