Winter can be the harshest season of the year. When temperatures drop below freezing,Preparing The Family For A Harsh Winter Articles there are many hazards that can cause problems for a family. Whether an individual is in the home or the car during a winter crisis time it is important to be prepared.

Snow, ice and other hazardous weather can make it difficult for visitors to travel from their vehicle to the house. Tools such as snow shovels, deicing compounds, and waterproof floor mats can make entering a home safer for both residents and guests.

Inside the home, one should have supplies that include plenty of food, water and other basic supplies to last at least four days without power or outside help. Be sure to include food that does not need heating or refrigeration as it is possible to lose power. Canned soups, stews and meats, along with energy bars and cereal can meet these needs. Be sure to have a manual can opener and disposable plates and utensils. The supply should also include one gallon of water per person per day, flashlights, radio and cell phone.

Prepare the car for travel in the winter by making sure it is ready for ice, snow or hazardous roads. The antifreeze should be checked before the first freeze. Older batteries should be checked and replaced if weak. Keep the gas tank topped off to ensure there is plenty of fuel and prevent freezing fuel lines.

Cars should be equipped for winter driving. A bag of cat litter can help provide traction if the vehicle slides off the road. Tire chains can be useful in getting home if trapped in a storm. There should be a blanket and a flashlight in each vehicle.

Because accidents can happen in winter weather, it is important to have a well supplied first aid kit in each vehicle as well as the car. If injuries are serious, call for an ambulance to transport the victim to the hospital, especially if unsure of one's own abilities to drive in winter conditions. Be sure that prescription medications are filled regularly to prevent running out of required medication.

Heat pumps should be serviced in the fall before winter weather arrives. Be sure all hoses are removed from faucets and stored away to prevent freezing pipes. Unless faucets are frost free models, they should be insulated to prevent freezing. Be sure gutters are firmly attached to the home and cleared of leaves and other debris before the first snow.
