The term mid wife hardly exists and has been replaced by doctors and nurses. However, like most things modern society is going back to some of the old practices and home birth is one such in the list. Homebirths definitely are comfortable but as far as safety is considered it may not prove to be so up to date. That is precisely why it has gone out of vogue. Though it is quite common in developing countries due to the lack of infrastructure surprisingly developed countries are on with it too!

Let us take a look at the precautions one needs to take during home birth:

  • The mid-wife - Selecting an experienced mid wife is the first and foremost thing to do as she is the one who will be doing everything related to your child birth. Know if the mid wife is qualified for this job, how many deliveries she has done and find out if she is reputed enough from her previous employees. Build a rapport with your mid wife as it is you and her in the final showdown.
  • Have an emergency plan - it is very much advisable that you have a backup plan if your delivery isn't going well. You mid wife should know a hospital or doctor as her back up plan. This ensures some safety if and when the home birth plan goes array. You can never be too sure and hence a backup plan is always good. Due to this reason you may want to consider having it done near to a hospital at a friend's or relative's place. Remember, time is very precious here.
  • Have all your checkups done - It is very important that you have done all your checkups and have all the important papers ready. Take a look at the papers; go to a doctor or consult your mid wife and find out of you are suitable to give birth at home. It may not be everyone's cup of tea as some may be physical ill suited.
  • Taking care of you - Be sure to take care of yourself during the days that lead up to the big day. Eating healthy will make sure you have enough strength to deliver and also it will keep your child healthy and fit.

You should always consult a doctor and find out the biological side of the story. Wanting to fulfill some fantasy of giving birth at home is good, but not at the cost of your child.
