Conan made a move recently from one tv network to another.
Conan O’Brien made a recent move from one television network to another after a much publicized departure as the host of The Tonight Show. While most of our departures won’t be so publicized, many of us are often faced with the prospect of moving from one apartment to another. Whether you are moving into your first apartment, or are moving from one apartment to another, there are several things that you should keep in mind in order to avoid confusion like that which Conan experienced. Here are some moving tips that will assist you before moving into your new apartment:
Walk Through Your Unit
Before Conan moved into his new studio to film Conan at TBS Studios, you can bet your bottom dollar that one of the first things he did was visit the set to check out the place. You should also be sure to walk through the actual unit that you will be renting and not just a model of the apartment’s floor plan. While looking at the model will give you some ideas on the floor plan, it doesn’t allow you to see any things specific to your unit that will need to be repaired prior to your move-in date. When doing the walk-through, ensure that all safety features, such as smoke or carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers, are in good working condition. If there are any specifics that need to be fixed, make a note and get them fixed before you move in.
Repairs
If requested repairs are not made prior to move-in, you should document in writing the items that need to be replaced or repaired, and provide a copy to the property management to be included in with your lease agreement. You should make sure to note any worn or deteriorated hardware such as faucets or pipes, broken appliances, stains or tears in the carpeting, etc. Be aware of any repairs that you will be responsible for after signing your lease. If fixing minor problems, such as a leaky faucet, is going to be your responsibility, it will be important to document these types of pre-existing problem prior to signing your lease.
Inspect the apartment unit
As you are scoping out your new digs, there are some things that you should be looking for. Ensure there are no chips in paint or peeling wallpaper and ensure all appliances included with the unit work properly. Take photos and document any damage or broken appliances. This will cover you when you move out and ask to have your deposit refunded. Remember, the best time to negotiate something that needs to be changed or repaired in your apartment is prior to move-in. Be sure that you are thorough when inspecting the unit and communicate to the property management anything that you find that should be addressed.
Be Organized
Once you have finalized your lease, it will time to prepare for the physical move. While Conan O’Brien probably had an entire team available to assist him in his transition, most of us will be handling the dirty work by ourselves. The important thing to remember is that the more and better organized you are, the more efficient your move will be. Be sure that you go through your belongings to determine what things should stay and what things should be moved. If there are things that you don’t want to move, consider having a garage sale to get rid of the unwanted items and make a few extra bucks on the side.
Transitioning to a new place can be taxing and overwhelming. Whether that move is to your first new place, to another apartment unit within the same property, or to a property that may be in a different city, there are steps that you can take to ensure that your move is efficient and least stressful as possible. The process for moving into new apartments can be stressful for the unprepared renter. Make sure you’re making the most of your time and money by using these helpful tips.
