Most makeup contain dyes or pigments which are utilized to achieve a desired color. Some cosmetics as with lipstick, contain fats, waxes and oils. Different types of make-up will respond to different type of cleaning solutions, and successful removal is dependent on knowing which solution works best for the type of stain you have.
Like all stains, lipstick and other make up stains are more easily cleaned off if you get onto it quickly rather than leaving it to set and become permanent. Makeup can be downright ugly when it gets on your carpet.
Since lipstick is oil-based, a simple soap that is designed to draw out oils is really all you need. Liquid foundation, concealer, cream blushers and cream eyeshadows: These are mostly oil-based stains, so glycerine is one of your best natural house cleaners for removing this stain. Dab it on and leave the glycerine to soak for an hour or so before washing as normal. If the stain has got onto something that isn't easy to pop in the washing machine (e.g. the carpet), scrub with warm soapy water. Washing soda added to the water will help attack the oils and will make the job easier.
Lipstick: Found on collars, pillowcases and (worst case scenario) smudged into carpets and wallpaper by a small inquisitive child. To clean lipstick off easy stuff (pillows and collars), dab the stain with a bit of meths or some other strong alcohol to dissolve the pigments and the worst of it. If a stain still lingers, then dab with a bit of glycerine to get the grease marks out. Then wash as normal. To get lipstick stains out of carpet, scrape as much as you can out with tissues, loo paper, rags, etc. Try not to spread the stain. Soak the area with meths or strong alcohol (again) and blot up.
Use dish soap and warm water to lift out lipstick stains without any remnant of the stain remaining in the kids' clothes or the carpet that they have happily adorned with all their purple and red dress-up lipsticks.
Simply take a cup of warm water (not hot, this melts the lipstick and makes it spread out) and add about a half teaspoon of grease-fighting dish soap to the water and stir it up to get a foamy mixture. Then, dip an old washcloth or a paper towel in the cleaning solution and dab at the lipstick stain to draw out the color and the oil of the stain. Don't rub the stain, as this will simply spread it and make it more difficult to remove.
Continue blotting at the stain with the dish soap and water until the stain is completely removed. If there are large chunks of lipstick in the stain, use a paper towel to pick up the stain before breaking it up and lifting it out with the dish soap and water solution. This just makes getting rid of the stain easier, as you have less lipstick to work with.
For liquid foundation that has been allowed to dry into the fibers of the carpet, it may be necessary to allow the hydrogen peroxide solution to sit on the stain for an hour or more in order to loosen the stain prior to removal. To do this, apply the hydrogen peroxide to the cloth and allow damped cloth to sit directly on the stain.
When the lipstick or other makeup stain has been satisfactorily removed, thoroughly rinse the reducing agent from carpet with an alkaline cleaning solution (pH 9-10) and dry carpet as much as possible.
