It is important to understand that an effective ant bait must actually attract the ants. Many commercial preparations are toxic to ants,Natural Baits for Ants Articles but the ants will avoid most of these making them a waste of money. Generally speaking, ants are attracted to sugar and/or protein.

Springtime brings beautiful weather and the arrival of ant season. There are a large variety of ants that invade our homes and yards each year. However, taking care of this problem does not require a lot of harsh chemicals or an expensive pest control bill. That's why many people prefer a natural ant repellant.

The first natural ant repellent is baby powder. Ants are killed by baby powder. Baby powder is really just Diatomaceous earth, a safe and natural substance. Pets will ignore baby powder and children aren't affected by it at all. Place a line of baby powder around windows, doors, and cracks, and you'll virtually eliminate your ant problem overnight.

Coffee is the second natural ant repellent I'm going to talk about here. Ants hate coffee, so they won't cross a line of it. You can use coffee in much of the same way as you use baby powder. Almost everyone has coffee in their cupboard, so it is an easy solution. But don't think you need to use the expensive stuff – generic is good enough for ants!

The final natural ant repellent I'd like to share in this article is Cream of Wheat. Cream of Wheat is a natural bait for ants. The workers take the cereal back to the nest where they share the food with all of the ants. When Cream of Wheat comes into contact with the internal fluids of the ant, it explodes. This is a way to take care of the entire ant problem with a bang.

You don't need to resort to using harsh chemicals to take care of your ant problem. There are, in fact, many natural ways to kill ants.

Apparently, all it takes to get rid of your ant problems is whole walnuts. Walnuts placed in the shell around ant dwellings deter them because they don't like the smell.

Pros:

  • Easy and cheap
  • Reusable for cooking purposes

Cons:

  • You're only repelling the ants, not killing them.
  • Effectiveness isn't proven.
  • Can poison dogs, so they are not safe for households with poochy pets.

Ants hate the smell of cucumbers with a passion, apparently.

Leaving out cucumber peels or slices will keep them from coming your way.

Pros:

  • They are really easy to find at a grocery store and relatively inexpensive.
  • You can deter ants, make a salad, and give yourself a facial all at once.
  • Nothing is more natural than a vegetable.

Cons:

  • Once again, you're not killing the ants, only repelling them.
  • Leaving cut slices of cucumber out is not aesthetically appealing and after a few days? Gross.
