Once cockroaches have infiltrated your apartment, they can quickly multiply and become a serious sanitation problem and a risk to your health. Cockroaches spread germs on countertops, dishes, and tables that may result in food poisoning and other illnesses.
While there are many cockroach pesticide sprays and foggers on the market, experts recommend they be used as a last resort. Indeed, exposure to the toxic chemicals in these products can present some danger to yourself, your family, and your pests, and should be used very carefully, if at all. Apart from the sprays and foggers, there are several other excellent methods of killing cockroaches. To learn more about these methods, read on.
Vacuum Cleaner
If you’ve got a sizable cockroach population in your apartment, you can quickly reduce those numbers with a vacuum and a hose attachment. Cockroaches tend to congregate in dark cabinets, in cracks and crevices, in cardboard boxes and stacks of newspaper, and behind appliances. With your vacuum hose in hand carefully make your way through the whole of your apartment. Look for cockroach droppings and shed skins for clues as to where the pests are hiding.Be sure to use a vacuum cleaner with a disposable bag-type collection system, so you can easily get rid of the trapped cockroaches. Once you’ve cleaned your apartment thoroughly, remove the vacuum bag and seal it inside a plastic garbage bag. To kill the roaches before disposing of the bag, you can leave it in your freezer for several hours.
Cockroach Bait
Once you’ve knocked out a good number of cockroaches with the vacuum cleaner, kill the rest with cockroach bait. Cockroach bait is widely available in hardware and grocery stores. Typically, you can choose from gel-based products or bait station products, which are small plastic containers with bait inside. Before purchasing a product, make sure it contains one of the following active ingredients: hydramenthylnon, fibronil, sulfuramid, boric acid, or abamectin. Cockroach baits are safe for humans and pets as long as they are not consumed.
Place your bait in all the areas of the apartment where you have seen cockroaches or evidence of cockroaches. Over the course of several weeks, cockroaches will feed on the bait and eventually die. Cockroaches that don’t eat bait directly are often poisoned when they eat the excrement or bodies of cockroaches that have eaten the bait.
Note that it is important to keep your apartment extra clean while you have the bait in place. If there are food scraps or crumbs available to the cockroaches, they are less likely to feed on the bait.Monitor for New Infestations
After you’ve killed off the cockroach population in your apartment, you can easily monitor for new infestations by placing cockroach sticky traps in several locations. If you find cockroaches stuck in the traps, you may need to re-bait your apartment.
