Many pond experts suggest that a depth of over 24 inches and strategic hiding spots will protect your fish from predators like cranes. However, this advice is often misguided. For instance, I once observed a crane cunningly lure my koi to the surface by regurgitating food into the pond, despite its five-foot depth. This incident debunked several myths: pond depth is not a significant deterrent, cranes are highly intelligent, and unfortunately, the more vibrant and costly the fish, the more appealing it is to predators.
Contrary to popular belief, ledges around the pond are an invitation to raccoons. Instead, incorporate raised bond beam walls for border planters and lower bog planters for plants like papyrus and iris. This design prevents predators from easily accessing the water's edge. The waterfall should cover a substantial portion of the pond's perimeter, with a steep drop-off that doesn't allow predators to perch near the water. In flat yards, a raised berm can create a natural barrier with sheer rock cliffs for additional plant life.
A dock or deck extending 13 inches above the water and cantilevered over a sheer raised rock bond beam can effectively thwart cranes and raccoons.
