Breast Augmentation- What Kind Of Breast Implants Do You Want?
Learn about the different types of breast implants. Learn about saline-filled and silicone-filled breast implants, textured and smooth breast implants, gummy bear breast implants, etc.
If you are considering breast augmentation surgery,
you will have to decide what kind of implants you want. Many different options are available including saline, silicone, and cohesive gel forms. Saline-filled and silicone-filled implants are approved by the FDA and they are available in various shapes and sizes. They are also available with smooth or textured shells. Cohesive or 'gummy bear' breast implants are another option for women who are planning to have breast augmentation surgery.
Silicone-filled and saline-filled type has an outer shell that is made from silicone. The shell is a flexible envelope that contains a silicone or saline filling. The shell also gives the breast implant its shape. For instance, breast implants are available in a round or teardrop shape. Teardrop-shaped have a pear-like shape. In addition, some breast implant models consist of an elastomer envelope that is inside of another elastomer envelope. These types of implants reduce the risk of deflation and rupture.
Saline-filled implants are filled with salt water or sterile saline. They are available in high and low profiles and in many sizes. Silicone-filled are filled with silicone gel. The silicone gel is less likely to leak and come out of the shell if it ruptures. The gel that is currently being used is cohesive.
Silicone-filled implants are softer, smoother, and they feel and look more natural looking compared to others. They feel more like human breast tissue than saline-filled implants. Silicone-gel implants are also less likely to rupture, ripple, and wrinkle than saline. Please note that thin women who do not have a lot of breast tissue have an increased risk of developing wrinkles that can be seen and felt.
When saline implants rupture, they usually deflate within a few hours. Silicone ruptures can be silent. So if you have silicone-filled implants, you need to to get MRI exams every few years after you have breast augmentation surgery. You can determine if your breast implants have ruptured with an MRI exam.
Textured implants have a thicker shell than smooth implants. Some breast augmentation plastic surgeons believe that textured implants can decrease the risks of capsular contracture. However, women can also decrease the risks of capsular contracture by using smooth breast implants and having them placed under the muscle. Keep in mind that textured breast implants cost a bit more than smooth implants. Make sure you discuss the options that are available to you before you have breast augmentation surgery.
They are also available in high, moderate, and low profiles. If you have a small chest wall, high profile implants will look bigger on you.
Before you have breast augmentation surgery, you will have to decide what kind of breast implant, shape, profile, surface, and size is right for you. A board certified plastic surgeon can help you make these decisions and help you achieve your goals.
