Breast Implants – The Pros and Cons of the Gummy Bear
When you're trying to choose which type of breast implants you want, you may be torn between silicone and saline. Scientists have been working on a style that will give you the best of both worlds and it's being called the gummy bear.
Science is always trying to develop something new and useful. One of the biggest areas that science focuses its concentration on is the medical field. For years,
your choices for breast augmentation of your has been between saline and silicone, but new technology has made it possible for other types of materials to be used in the construction of breast implants. One of the newest technologies being offered is the "gummy bear." However, as nice as having something new is, there are pros and cons for you to consider.
To answer the question, "What is this gummy bear?," it's simple. These breast implants are filled with a highly cohesive, form-stable silicone gel. This means they are a little harder than the traditional version. That being said, they do have a natural tissue feel so you shouldn't have to worry about that hard feeling when they are touched.
What makes the gummy bear type so great if it's hard? The thing is you don't have the same concerns that you do with the standard silicone insert. Everyone has heard about the health risks associated with a leaky silicone enhancement. It's dangerous and it is highly suggested that you visit a doctor as soon as possible because the silicone from the breast implants can get into other systems in your body. Saline has often been pushed as a substitute, but the patient looses that natural feel because saline is nothing like natural tissue. With this newer type, you get the best of both because the gel is hard enough to stay in place should the bag tear. The risk of migration to other systems in your body is minimal, making it far safer than the traditional choice.
Another plus for these new breast implants are the fact that they are stable and migration is minimal, which means there is a lessened risk of scarring and granulomas that are often caused by migration. A lessened risk of inflammation means less pain for you. You can just enjoy your new body without the worry of when something is going to make you sick. You can also worry less about capsular contracture (scarring around the breast implants) because these seem to have less to them. The capsular contracture has shown less in clinical trials so what would be considered "normal" scarring would occur later.
There are some draw backs, however: because of its stable form, there has to be a larger incision made to insert them. Because of a larger incision (up to 5.5 inches) there is an increased risk of infection. Your doctor can tell you how to ensure minimum risk of infection from this.
Breast implants have come a long way over the years. The gummy bear style is on the horizon to be the next big thing in cosmetic surgery. Women will soon have the choice to have the more natural feel of silicone with the safety of saline with this type of enhancement. While there are a few drawbacks, many would agree that this is a step in the right direction.
